Olympus Corporation was founded in Tokyo in 1919, with its first camera released in 1936. The company's PEN half-frame system (1959) and OM SLR system (1972) were defining cameras of their decades, and the 2008 Pen E-P1 helped launch the modern mirrorless category on the Micro Four Thirds mount. Olympus sold its imaging division in 2020; the line continues under the OM System brand through OM Digital Solutions. Samsonic carries the current OM System / Olympus-branded cameras and lenses at U.S. retail.
